Rogers Wins Wet Race 2Posted by Mark Jones, 10 August 2008, 12:05 PM |
The heavens opened immediately before the first Superkart race of the day but it did not seem to bother Michael Rogers who took his second race victory of the weekend, pulling steadily away from Tim Scarman over the five lap journey around Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit for the sixth round of the Shannons Nationals Motor Racing Championships.
In treacherous conditions of light, but worsening rain as the race developed, Rogers IWT Arrow was able to claim a 1.4 second victory as Scarman kept clear of the field for second position.
A tactical battle for third saw Jason McIntyre outdrag Shaun Jones to the finish line after McIntyre passed Jones in the final corner of the race. Colin Moore raced a lonely race coming home in fifth position.
A race long battle amongst the Rotax Heavy class saw again Mark Wicks lead the pack of karts home for sixth position behind the leading five Rotax Lights with Ryan Felmingham second and Brendan Luneman snatching third away from Rod Clarke on the final lap of the race.
A storming opening lap from Sean Whitfield (Wild Digital Phoenix) allowed him to climb into tenth position overall, and whil he faded through the field as the more powerful senior class karts picked their way past Whitfield was able to maintain his advatage over the Junior Max class, fighting back from his Race 1 dramas to win. Mitchell Abbott was again second with Brandon Stillwell coming home in third position.
The Australian non-gearbox Nationals will take to the track again in the early afternoon but the weather is closing in around the racetrack.
