Colin McIntyre set the fastest lap of the day during Friday free practice at the opening round of the 2009 Australian Superkart Championship, part of Round 4 of the Shannons Motor Racing Championships at Mallala Motor Sport Park, north of Adelaide.
The Melbourne based McIntyre set a time of 1:07.2397 in the opening session of the morning in the Marron Excavations Anderson-FPE. Team mate Gary Pegoraro, who won the Mallala round in 2008 topped the timesheets in the second session of unofficial practice, but mechanical dramas bothered both karts and Pegoraro had a precautionary overnight engine change in the Wizzer Race Engines Anderson-FPE.
Sydney's Sam Zavaglia was the leading Stockman driver in his Yamaha engined Stockman MR2, won of five drivers to get under a 1:09 time during the day, along with fellow Stockman race Warren McIlveen (Mac's Marine Stockman-Honda) and reigning series champion, Darren Hossack in the Safe Evolutions Anderson-SAFE. Hossack's new team mate for the weekend, former Perkins Motorsport V8 Supercar driver Shane Price, did not record a lap during the first two sessions, but the kart as cured of its electrical dramas for Price to start the third session although rain masked the competitiveness of Price's afternoon times.
Price is having only his second race meeting in a Superkart after having captured the New Zealand Superkart Championship two months ago at Ruapuna Park.
Engine rebuilds plagued the Superkart pits as the 36 entries prepared for Saturday mornings first qualifying session. Jeff Reed, Jason Laker both had overnight rebuilds while Melbourne based New Zealander Anton Stevens is in the progress of stripping his engine after finding debris inside a cylinder.
In the 125cc engine capacity class battle, Queenslander Chryss Jamieson (Coach Design Stockman-Honda) set the fastest lap, recording a 1:14.7423, 1.6 seconds faster then 16-year-old Melbourne racer Steven Tamasi (Domain Prestige Homes Stockman-Honda). Jeff Reed was third fastest in the Telgrit Stockman-Honda until damaging the cylinder forcing overnight repairs.
Qualifying begins at 10:40am on Saturday, the first of two sessions ahead of the first of four races which will be 4:25pm this afternoon.
